1. Compliment Someone’s Tattoo

A conversation can be started by simply commenting on someone’s tattoo. A phrase as simple as “I love your tattoo!” or “That tattoo is really cool!” can be enough to make someone feel heard and wish to tell you a little bit about themselves. Remember, all it takes to build a friendship is for someone to make that first point of connection.

2. Use Your Own Tattoo as a Talking Point

If you have a tattoo, or multiple tattoos that you think would be of interest to a stranger nearby, why not use it as a point of commonality? For example, if you notice a band t-shirt someone is wearing and you happen to have song lyrics as a tattoo, why not say, “Cool shirt, I love that band; I have their song lyrics on my arm.” Relating your tattoo to the individual can make them feel connected and more open to discussing your shared interest.

3. Join a Group for People Who Like Tattoos/Follow Tattoo Artists

If you are a bit anxious to make friends in person, why not use the online space to connect with others? Join a social media group exclusively for people who have tattoos or love looking at tattoo designs. This is a great way to share your opinions and develop common interests with other people. If you cannot find a group that interests you, look for tattoo artists that you like online. This can be a great way to support the amazing work an artist has created and bond with others who are part of their community.

Here are five ways you can develop a friendship using tattoos:

4. Start a Pinterest Board of Tattoo Designs/Share Tattoo Designs

If you have managed to bond with someone over tattoos, it could be fun to create a Pinterest board together, or alternatively, you could send each other images of tattoos that you like. This is a great opportunity to stay connected with someone and can be a great conversation starter. Something as simple as “Hey, I saw this design and thought you’d like it” is enough to ignite a conversation.

5. Matching Tattoos

Once you have developed a strong friendship with someone, matching tattoos are always an option. A matching tattoo can be quite subtle, like matching symbols, or more overt, such as two tattoo designs that complete one another. Getting a tattoo with a friend is a huge milestone in a relationship and a celebration of the bond that the two of you have together. If you and your friend are apart, you can always look at your tattoo to remind you of the good times you’ve had together.
